The exhibition entitled Culture from the street to the house ... and back is a collaboration between Hiša kulture and an informal group of artists from the Karst region, who have come together as part of the project Culture to the street!
The project was conceived by Jovana Đukić and Maša Pušnik as a promotional incentive for young people in the creative sector in the Karst region. It took the form of two culture and arts events in a public space in Sežana (2021 and 2022), which were held with the aim of introducing young creatives from the Karst, offering them the opportunity to take up their own space, showcase their work and get to know each other. The starting point was the observation that there was a lack of spaces in Sežana where young creatives could gather, exchange ideas and exhibit their work. Creative spaces were therefore set up on the streets of Sežana – billboards normally used for advertising were rented and dressed in white, offering a "street studio" for live creative work. The participants of the events came together in an informal group and decided to explore where a shared vision could take them – the exhibition Culture from the street to the house ... and back is one of their first projects.
In line with the original project, the exhibition is conceived as an interaction between a closed exhibition space and the street. As a prelude to the exhibition, the participants present the history of the Culture to the street! project in the form of a joint art publication. This is followed by a presentation of individual artworks created during an artist residency in Istria. Through a personal and intimate vision of a shared urban space, the participants have attempted to answer the questions of where art belongs, where it can be found and who (co-)creates it, thereby reflecting on the production, presentation and perception of art in different spaces.
